Abstract
A local linear response method for static atomic polarizabilities and shielding factors is presented, and a new numerical method for solving the pertinent first order perturbation equations is employed. Applications to atoms with a singlet ground state and Z<or=36 are made. Satisfactory agreement with best available results is obtained with Slater's exchange potential having alpha =1, for all atoms. Keywords
