Gastrin Concentration in Gastric Mucosa

Abstract

We have studied the effect of feeding on the concentration of gastrin in the fundic and antral mucosa of intact dogs and in the fundic mucosa of dogs with antrectomies. The effect of antrectomy itself on fundic mucosal gastrin levels was also studied. Feeding caused no significant change in the gastrin concentration, measured 90 minutes postprandially, of either the fundic or antral mucosa of intact dogs. Similarly, feeding had no effect on the fundic mucosal levels of dogs with antrectomy. Antrectomy caused a 70% reduction in the concentration of gastrin in fundic mucosa, but had no effect on basal levels of circulating serum gastrin. These findings suggest that feeding stimulates a rapid antral synthesis as well as release of gastrin, and that gastrin of antral origin may well contribute to fundic levels.
