Abstract
The effect of an increased rate of hemoglobin destruction upon the rate of endogenous CO production was investigated in 1 female and 4 male subjects. The hemoglobin destruction rate was increased by relnjectlng the subject''s own erythrocytes which had been treated with N-ethylmaleimide. In all subjects the rate of CO production increased after the injection of the cells. The amount of this increase corresponded to the formation of an average of 0.97 [plus or minus] 0.06 mole COfor each mole of heme destroyed. This study provides evidence that CO is an in vivo end product of heme catabolism. Keywords
