Abstract
Certain problems underlying the inefficiency of current auditory screening programs for newborn infants are examined in the light of relevant research. Studies relative to neonatal behavior, observer effects, stimulus-response variables, non-responding infants and habituation are briefly reviewed. Ways in which current screening programs might be improved are suggested and a few of the many research needs are specified. Keywords
