In the considerable literature relating to the neural control of the adenohypophysis only a few papers deal with the morphology of the innervation of the rabbit gland. Croll [1928] found numerous non-medullated fibres in the pars intermedia and fewer in the pars anterior. Brooks & Gersh [1941] described abundant fibres in the anterior lobe which disappeared after section of the pituitary stalk. Drager [1944] and Green & Harris [1947] found only occasional nerves. Although none of these papers can be considered as conclusive, especially in regard to the origin of the fibres, the evidence drawn from them, and from investigations in other species, suggests the existence of many nerve fibres related to the glandular cells. The conflicting results obtained from experimental work, however, have led the investigators to minimize or deny the participation of nerves in the central control of the gland.
