Cerebral Control of Secretion of Antidiuretic Hormone: Effect of Electrical Stimulation of the Prepyriform Area on the Neurohypophysis in the Dog

Abstract
The prepyriform area of the dog brain was exposed by the temporal approach under chloralose anesthesia. The area was then stimulated about 4 hr. after the operation. ADH levels in the jugular vein blood were determined before and after stimulation. ADH levels in the jugular vein blood showed a significant increase after the stimulation of this area, while a similar stimulus to another part of the brain (anterior sylvian gyrus) did not result in any change in ADH levels. These results suggest that the prepyriform area of the brain may be a regulatory factor in ADH secretion.
