Abstract
The chemistry and pharmacology of a new polymer, polyglycolic acid, are described. Experimental studies have shown this substance to be a suitable suture material in animals. The present study details experience with the material in 120 patients in a variety of general surgical operations. The results show polyglycolic acid sutures to be superior to catgut and to fulfil the criteria laid down for the ideal absorbable material. Keywords
