Abstract
New approaches to establish the molecular genetic bases of psychotic illness have recently been suggested which make different demands on diagnosticians attempting to provide reliable and valid phenotypic definitions. The diagnostic problems that have arisen to date and some solutions to these are considered. In addition, future diagnostic requirements for linkage and association studies are discussed. Keywords
