Abstract
The authors compare the merit of transverse and longitudinal waves in ultrasonic light modulators. In modulation modes in which the desirable property of polarization rotation of the modulation is achieved, transverse waves are shown to be superior to longitudinal waves in all significant respects. The reduction in background illumination attainable in a diffraction modulator employing transverse waves is demonstrated experimentally.Keywords
