Alopecia Mucinosa

Abstract

We have followed up the clinical course of 50 patients wtih alopecia mucinosa. These patients have been classified into three groups. Group 1 consisted of 18 patients with one or two skin lesions usually located on the face or scalp. They were observed for an average of four years. All these patients showed complete remission of their skin lesions with or without therapy. Group 2 consisted of 25 patients with multiple skin lesions. The follow-up study in this series revealed no evidence of transformation into lymphoma. Seventeen patients showed complete remission of their skin lesions within a three-year period. In eight others, skin lesions were still present in a follow-up averaging 12 months. Group 3 consisted of seven patients with multiple skin lesions and histologic evidence of combined follicular mucinosis and lymphoblastoma.
