Magnetic properties of a random close packed amorphous alloy

Abstract
Quantum mechanical calculations are presented for the magnetic properties of an amorphous alloy. The structure of the alloy is taken to be the random close packing of atomic spheres, and its magnetic properties are described by a random single ion anisotropy and a nearest neighbour Heisenberg exchange. The magnetization and the specific heat of the alloy are computed, and the relevance of the results to experiments on amorphous rare earth iron compounds discussed.
