Abstract
The enterohepatic circulation of double labelled andro-stenolone-glucuronide was investigated in 3 human subjects. Following their injection into the portal vein, C19-steroid glucuronides reached the peripheral circulation without hydrolysis, but they appeared in the bile only after hydrolysis and reconjugation with sulphuric or glucuronic acid. Following infusion into the duodenum the C19-steroid glucuro-nide was completely hydrolysed within the intestinal wall. Here, 70% of the free steroids were conjugated with sulphuric acid and 10% with glucuronic acid.
