Chronic Pancreatitis in the Western Cape

Abstract
A review of 1,006 patients studied over a 12-year period underlines the importance of alcohol in calcific, chronic and, to a lesser extent, acute pancreatitis. The racial incidence, natural history and complications of calcific pancreatitis are presented and genetic data discussed. Recognition of a pre-calcific state based on tests of endocrine and exocrine function is suggested.
