STUDIES ON THE METABOLISM OF PHOTOSYNTHETIC BACTERIA VI

Abstract
A new representative of the photosynthetic bacteria, identified as R. gelatinosa (Athiorhodaceae),was isolated by an enrichment procedure specific for photosynthetic isopropanol oxidizing bacteria, particularly representatives of the Athio-rhodaceae. This strain is characterized by its ability to metabolize isopropanol, acetone and ethyl methyl ketone. Acetone isolated during the photometabolism of ordinary isopropanol by bacterial cells uniformly labeled with radioactive C14 contained no radioactivity. From this it was inferred that the conversion of isopropanol to acetone proceeds via direct dehydrogenation.
