The Chemical Composition of Algal Cell Walls

Abstract
Approximately 90% of all photosynthetic CO2 fixation is attributed to algae.1 From planktonic microcells to the massive 30-meter kelps, algal cell wall polymers comprise nearly half of the total nonaqueous biomass; between one tenth to one half of all the solar energy converted into chemical bond energy on our planet is stored in the cell walls of algae.
