THE PURPOSE of this paper is to present a technic for the management of extensive cicatricial stenosis of the esophagus. This technic has been employed in the University Hospital at Ann Arbor, Mich., during the last four years, with satisfying results. The prime objective of treatment is, of course, to relieve the patient of his symptoms and to establish an adequate esophageal lumen. A minimal period of hospitalization is possible when the patient is trained to carry out his own dilation. This not only helps to lessen the morbidity but also is a powerful boost to the patient's mental outlook. Unfortunately, most of the patients with stricture of the esophagus present themselves when their condition is of long standing.
