Abstract
A novel image coding algorithm that exploits the relationship between various subbands of an image is presented. This algorithm has been simulated on the monochrome 'Lena' image and an MIT high-definition (HD) video. Uniform-threshold quantizers (UTQs) and differential pulse code modulation (DPCM) are used in the implementation of the algorithm. Using local variance for classification, a 15% reduction in quantization noise has been achieved compared with other published techniques for 'Lena' at an average bit rate of 1.0 bit/pixel. For the MIT HD video, this reduction was 29.1%.Keywords
