Abstract
ACETYLSALICYLIC acid accounts for 19 per cent of the accidental ingestions by children under five years of age and is a commonly used drug in suicidal attempts by adults.1 In the case reported below these two aspects of the abuse of the drug were associated to produce congenital salicylate intoxication. It is of particular interest because of the fluid and electrolyte abnormalities peculiar to the newborn infant.B.G.P. was admitted to the Children's Hospital Medical Center at 20 hours of age, with a history of increasing hyperpnea since 3 hours of age.
