Interferometer Used to Study Transient Heating of Water

Abstract
This paper discusses the use of a Mach‐Zehnder interferometer in a study of heat transfer in water. A derivation of the formula is given relating temperature change to fringe shift and a correction procedure is shown for end effects. Temperature distributions are determined for pulse‐heated Nichrome foils in water. With the experimental conditions used in this report, a maximum temperature gradient of 280°C/cm was observed.
