The Organization of Role-Relationships: A Systematic Description

Abstract
Two sets of raters independently scored 100 role-relationships on 16 general variables. Factor analyses of these two sets of ratings produced similar factor structures defined by three major factors. These factors were interpreted as reflecting the "intimacy," "visibility," and "regulation" of the role-relationships. Eight types of role-relationships emerge from a cross-classification of these three factors, after dichotomization. Some of the structural pressures underlying the appearance of various role-relationships in each of these types are discussed. Particularly important seem to be variations in the kinds of social control most relevant to different role-relationships.
