Embryonic Appendages of the Notched Sternite Mutant of Blattella germanica1

Abstract

Embryos of the notched sternite mutant are characterized by a series of metamerically arranged appendages which occur on the first 9 abdominal segments. The morphology and development of the appendages are described. They appear to represent an unusually advanced expression of rudimentary abdominal legs. Their occurrence in a mutant characterized by other apparently primitive traits in postembryonic stages is probably significant.
