USE OF THE VENTRAL PROSTATE IN THE ASSAY OF HUMAN CHORIONIC GONADOTROPHIN

Abstract
Injn. of human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) increases the wt. of the ventral prostate of Sprague-Dawley rats, hypophysectomized at 22 days of age and injected from the 3d- 7th days post-hypophysectomy with 1.0 ml. of the test soln subcut./day. The wt. increase is directly proportional to the dose from 0.5 to at least 2 I.U. of HCG. The assay is not affected by the presence of follicle stimulating hormone, which does increase the wt. of seminal vesicles The smallest amt. of HCG detectable was 0.6 ug. protein N of a crystalline prepn. ("Gonadex", Leo) or 0 5 units of international standard, using 5 animals for assay.
