Magnitude of the Moon Illusion as a Function of the Age of the Observer

Abstract

The diminution in the apparent size of an object when viewed overhead as compared with its apparent size in the horizontal plane is greater for children than for adults. This relationship, of which the well-known moon illusion is a special case, is interpreted to be a consequence of the normal development of size constancy.
