Abstract
We have measured the spin-orbit splitting, Zeeman effect, and splitting under stress of the lowest vibronic levels of the term of in the octahedral site of KMg. The results are compared with the predictions of the Ham theory of the dynamic Jahn-Teller effect in the strong-coupling regime, extended to include the effects of interterm spin-orbit coupling. With essentially only one adjustable parameter, this comparison is a very searching test of the theory. Excellent quantitative agreement with the first-order theory is found. The second-order corrections are small, but are found to be in at least qualitative agreement with experiment.
