Abstract
The transient excitation of molecular vibrations by a picosecond laser-pulse train depends critically on the detailed shape of the exciting pulses. Stokes pulses shorter than or equal to the generating laser pulses have been observed in C. Other aspects of the transient nature include the stimulation of two Stokes lines in methanol and the absence of backward Stokes radiation.
