Abstract
The metabolic syndrome is an important cause of cardiovascular disease.1-5 Its prevalence is increasing, especially in young individuals,6-8 and there is evidence that the onset of the metabolic syndrome in adulthood has its roots early in life.9-13 Prevention of the metabolic syndrome is an important public health goal, but requires better insight into its determinants and their development over time. Keywords
