Reactions of thermal energy ions. Part 3.—Ion–molecule reactions in H2O and D2O

Abstract
The formation of H3O+ in the high-pressure mass spectrum of H2O and, similarly, the formation of D3O+ in D2O are the result of the ion molecule reactions, H2O++H2O→H3O++OH (1) OH++H2O→H3O++O (2) D2O++D2O→D3O++OD (3) OD++D2O→D3O++O. (4) The thermal rate constants, measured directly by a pulsing technique, are k1= 4.93×10–10, k2= 4.72×10–10, k3= 3.66×10–10 and k4= 2.25×10–10, all in cm3 molecule–1 sec–1.
