Abstract
A general expression is obtained for the longitudinal dispersion coefficient for a passive contaminant in a varying channel. This expression reveals the upstream memory character of the dispersion coefficient. Simple examples are used to illustrate the effects of: a sudden change in breadth, centrifugally driven secondary flows, and changes in the depth profile. Keywords
