Mechanisms of microcrack growth in magnesium oxide crystals

Abstract
The dislocation movements associated with microcrack growth in ascleaved single crystals of magnesium oxide have been revealed by recording the associated birefringence changes in ciné-film and by post-fracture examination. The observations suggest a mechanism by which cracks well below the critical Griffith size may grow; the mechanism is not exclusive however and the conditions under which other mechanisms may operate are discussed.
