Abstract
A review of more than 400 references on: the histogenesis of red blood cells and of Hb; the elaboration of Hb and its components, protoporphyrin, Fe, and globin; methods, such as low atmospheric O2, hemorrhage, and diet, for producing exptl. anemia; and the relation of Fe, of Cu, of CO, and of other metals to blood formation. Under the relation of Fe to blood formation the author discusses pre-natal Fe stores, Fe metabolism in infancy, tissue and storage Fe, dietary Fe, blood Fe, and the mechanism of action of Fe. Under the relation of Cu to blood formation he takes up Cu storage in tissues, blood Cu, the mechanism of effect of Cu on blood formation, and (separately for man and other animals) the question of indispensability.
