Abstract
A simple explanation is presented for the observed tendency of the spin-orbit part of the optical potential for a proton scattered by a nonspherical target nucleus to be more deformed than the central part. The explanation is based on the fact that the range of the central two-body force is longer than that of the two-body spin-orbit force. Keywords
