Histidine deficiency in the rat and its effect on the carnosine and anserine content of muscle

Abstract
Rats maintained on a histidine-free diet for 40-60 days showed loss in wt., lowered Hb and plasma protein values. The carnosine and anserine contents of the rats were estimated, anserine by the [beta]-alanine content with a yeast-growth method, carnosine by the Pauly reaction. On the histidine-free diet the rats showed a definite decrease in the carnosine content of the muscles, but no change in the anserine.
