Abstract
A theory of anaerobiosis has been constructed on the observation that at least the better known anaerobic bacteria do not produce catalase and hence can not destroy peroxides produced in their metabolic activities. They thus are restricted to anaerobic conditions, where H2O2 production does not occur. Attention is here called to a propionic acid-producing organism which is anaerobic but which produces large amounts of catalase.
