Abstract
A portable FM-CW radar system for collecting the ground truth data of snowpack, such as snow depth, density, snow stratigraphy and so on, was developed. The net weight and the sizes of the main frame of this system were 7.8 kg and 153(W)/spl times/568(D)/spl times/173(H) mm respectively. The microwave frequency was swept linearly over the range, 8 to 18 GHz. Using the data collected by the system moving on the snow surface, the topography of the internal layered structure in the snowpack were composed and displayed on the LCD. Experimental results showed the validity of this portable radar for collecting the ground truth data of snowpack in the microwave observation from satellites.<>Keywords
