Abstract
Atherosclerosis is a disease following upon alterations in cholesterol-lipid-lipoprotein metabolism. A high-fat, high-calorie diet ingested over the life span is a necessary prerequisite for the development of significant atherosclerosis in large numbers in a given population. Whether an individual will develop atherosclerotic vascular disease depends on humoral-hormonal-neural mechanisms, that is, endogenous factors. The hormones shown to influence lipid metabolism and atherogenesis most profoundly are the thyroid, pancreas and the gonadal hormones, particularly estrogens.
