Modifications of the Compound Eye of Drosophila melanogaster Arising Under X-Irradiation

Abstract
A number of modifications of eye color and form in homozygous eosin stock of D. melanogaster are figured and described. These were found during a study of the production of mosaic patches of whitened or lightened ommatidia in imagoes arising from eggs and young larvae subjected to x-rays, involving very large numbers and undertaken in the course of a statistical evaluation of the volume of the white locus. Most of the modifications were observed in x-rayed stock, but a few were found in lower frequency in control material. Several have previously been described by Patterson. No interpretation of any of them is attempted at present.
