Theory of Plasma Wave Probes in a Collisionless Plasma

Abstract
The theory of the emission of longitudinal plasma waves by a pair of grids immersed in a hot plasma is developed using the Vlasov equation. The energy radiated by these grids is derived from a variation of the Landau treatment of spatially varying waves in a collisionless plasma. The principal result is that closely spaced grids have a surprisingly high efficiency for exciting the fundamental model of the plasma.
