STUDIES ON LIPID METABOLISM IN THE SMALL INTESTINE WITH OBSERVATIONS ON THE ROLE OF BILE SALTS*†

Abstract
The esterifi-cation of palmitate-1-C14 and the incorporation of label from glu-cose-C14 into lipid has been studied in slices and everted sacs of mammalian intestine. Palmitate-1-C14 esterification is enhanced by conjugated bile salts which seem to act by affecting the mucosal cell directly. Free bile salts, such as desoxycholate inhibit transport processes and exert a deleterious effect upon the mucous cell causing histological damage.
