Study of the Reaction of Electronically Excited Oxygen Molecules with Carbon Monoxide

Abstract
The reaction of oxygen in the 1Σg+, 1Δg, and 3Σg states with CO was investigated at temperatures below the point at which heterogeneous reaction is detectable. The excited oxygen was produced photochemically. In spite of moderate partial pressures of excited oxygen (about 0.25 μ), and an extremely sensitive method of analyzing for the product, no evidence of reaction was found. Upper limits for hypothetical bimolecular and termolecular rate constants are reported.
