Abstract
The general expressions for single-crystal magnetostriction correct to second order (sixth-rank magnetostrictive tensor) are reduced and evaluated for the particular anisotropies of Dy and Tb. The magnetostrictive constants are determined from x-ray diffraction measurements of the crystal cell distortions. Expressions for the polycrystalline magnetostriction are obtained by suitable averaging and compared with values from the literature. Keywords
