Caries-Preventive Salt Fluoridation

Abstract
The use of iodized salt as a vehicle for fluoride 1st appeared in a 1948 study for the prevention of endemic goiter in Switzerland. Results of a clinical study in 1956 showed a favorable cariostatic effect of fluoride-supplemented salt. This conclusion confirmed data from a survey which was published a year earlier. Carefully planned studies with fluoride-supplemented salt was started in Colombia and Spain in 1965, and in Hungary in 1966. These studies are most important because concentrations of fluoride in salt in the range of 200-350 mg F/kg salt were used while in Switzerland only 90 mg F/mg were added until 1970.
