• Temporal arteritis, with the exception of ocular manifestations, is a self-limited and benign condition; therefore, treatment and prevention of the associated visual loss should be the immediate and primary consideration. It is believed that cortisone and the related steroids will control temporal arteritis as long as it endures, and will at least prevent progression of any loss of vision that may exist at the time of diagnosis. The optimal dose and duration of treatment with adrenal corticosteroids have not, as yet, been adequately defined. Relapse may occur in some instances when the daily dose of cortisone is lowered beyond a certain point, usually 100 mg.
