IMMUNOREACTIVE NEUROPHYSINS AND VASOTOCIN IN HUMAN FOETAL PINEAL GLANDS

Abstract
This study confirmed the presence of immunoreactive neurophysins and arginine-vasotocin (AVT) in normal fetal pineal. Glands from 5 fetuses were individually homogenized in 1 ml 0.9% NaCl by ultrasonication and then centrifuged. A 0.5 ml aliquot of the supernatant was chromatographed on a Sephadex G-75 column. Radioimmunoassays of immunoreactive neurophysins and of AVT were performed on each ml of the column eluate and on 0.2 ml of the supernatant before chromatography. Individual characteristics and hormonal content of the 5 glands are given. The content of the glands removed 30 min or more after death was less than that of freshly removed pineal.
