Further Experimental Investigations of Injuries from Contrast Media in Cerebral Angiography

Abstract
Repeated injn. of a contrast medium into the carotid artery involves a risk of a summation-effect if the interval between the individual injns. is short. Even slightly toxic contrast media are injurious if injected in this manner. Retardation of the circulation in the brain will prolong the application time and lead to an injury, even though the contrast media are injected fairly quickly. Latent vascular injury in the brain is liable to be aggravated and become manifest by the injn. of a contrast medium of the dio-drast type in cerebral angiography. This was demonstrated experimentally by injn. of another chemo-toxic substance in an otherwise noninjurious quantity immediately before, or simultaneously with, the injn. of the contrast soln. Certain cerebral disease processes may presumably have a similar effect.
