Organic Semiconductors: Aromatic Hydrocarbon Positive Ions in Solids

Abstract
Mixtures of aromatic hydrocarbons with antimony pentachloride in carbon tetrachloride have been studied by the methods of electron spin resonance and visible spectroscopy. The observation of a Tyndall effect and the spectroscopicproperties show that the mixtures are colloidalsuspensions. The visible spectra are characteristic of aromatic ions and a comparison of ion concentrations measured by visible spectroscopy and spin concentrations measured by spin resonance indicates that the aromatic ions in the solids are the only paramagnetic species present. The solids were found to exhibit high electronic conductivity.
