Determination of trace polystyrene in the presence of durene by dual-wavelength spectrophotometry

Abstract
Dual-wavelength spectrophotometry was successfully applied for determining 5×10-54×10-3 M (mole of repeating unit per dm3) of polystyrene in tetrahydrofuran in the presence of 2 × 10-4M of durene. Key bands were selected at 280.7 and 261.8 nm. This method may be effective in the determination of polystyrene in its mixture with a compound which has absorptions overlapping with those of polystyrene, provided the compound shows an additional band at a longer wavelength than that of polystyrene.
