A Study of the System Carbonic Acid, Carbon Dioxide and Water

Abstract
By continuous observation of the pH, the change in (H+) in a bicarbonate solution on the addition of a dilute HC1 (0.95 cc. HCl in 100 cc. of bicarbonate solution) was studied. The hydration velocity was proportional to the (H+) of the system. At about ph 7 the bicarbonate system had practically no immediate buffering capacity. The mathematical discussion is exhaustive.
