Failure to Transmit Infectious Hepatitis to Chimpanzees.

Abstract
An attempt was made to produce infectious hepatitis in 2 adult and 4 young chimpanzees by administering (orally and parenterally) human stools and serum obtained during the acute phase of naturally occurring or experimentally induced infectious hepatitis in man. These materials were proven to be infectious by transmission of the disease experimentally to human volunteers. Liver function tests were made every 7-10 days during the period of observations of the animals (2-4 mos.) and the livers of 2 of the animals were examined at the end of 2 and 4 mos. respectively. No evidence of successful transmission of infectious hepatitis was obtained. This is in keeping with the failure to transmit this disease to lower animals.
