Abstract
The channeling probability for 5.0 MeV protons in the {110} planes of silicon has been deduced from the transmitted-particle energy distribution. The fraction of the incident beam initially channeled is found to be substantially larger than that calculated from the usual interpretation of scattering measurements in channeling and nonchanneling directions. This discrepancy is ascribed to nonchanneled particles with trajectories which yield high probabilities for particle scattering but which have a small effect on the energy loss of the transmitted particles. Keywords
