The Stress Tolerance Test

Abstract
The Stress Tolerance Test includes part of the Rorschach Inkblot Series, part of the Harrower Inkblot Series, and a set of pictures somewhat analogous to the material used in Murray''s Thematic Apperception Test. The test was developed for the purpose of determining the presence of uncontrolled combat anxiety in returned veterans. In the presentation of the test, slides No. 2, 6, 7, 9, and 10 of the Rorschach Series were followed by 10 slides of dramatic war and combat pictures and these were followed in turn by slides No. 2, 6, 7, 9, and 10 of the Harrower Series. The Harrower Series closely parallel and are the perceptual equivalent of the correspondingly numbered cards in the Rorschach Series. After preliminary experimentation in which the response to the combat pictures was detd. and the inkblot slides most likely to reflect disturbances selected, the test was administered to 24 patients suffering from operational fatigue and to 31 control subjects. It was found that a significantly larger % of patients than control subjects showed greater blocking of responses to the inkblot series immediately following the combat pictures than to the. series preceding it. The combat patients also failed more often in describing the combat pictures and they gave more personalized answers. The test was also given to larger groups of patients and control subjects with similar results. In the larger groups, the effect of the combat pictures on the patients appeared less disturbing and there were fewer personalized responses to them. The test proved valuable as an objective indicator of the degree of a patient''s improvement.
